Passing of Alain Costes, former LAAS director
It is with deep emotion and great sadness that we share with you the sad news of the passing of Alain COSTES on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
Former director of LAAS-CNRS (1984–1996) and former president of the Institut national polytechnique de Toulouse (1996–2000), he worked tirelessly to advance technological research and foster partnerships with socio-economic stakeholders, particularly during his tenure as Director of Technology under the Minister of Research (2000–2003). In particular, he established the innovative concept of a joint research-industry laboratory, which has since been widely adopted. He was also a co-founder of the Mapping Consulting company (2009).
Alain COSTES left an indelible mark on the history of the laboratory and was one of its pillars. LAAS has always been his second family. He was a fervent advocate for the laboratory and played a major role in raising its profile, both locally and nationally, always striving to position it among the world’s best.
We remember him as a visionary director—engaging, kind, generous, and unifying—who always devoted his energy to advancing research and higher education, as well as to the economic development of Toulouse and the Region.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and former colleagues.
Goodbye, Alain, and Thank you!
Leave a tribute to Alain Costes
