Benoit Rougier, laureate of Léoplod Escande INP Prize

The Benoit Rougier's thesis, former PhD student of the Micro and Nanosystems for Wireless Communication - MINC team under the Hervé Aubert's supervision, is among the 21 laureates of the Leopold Escande INP Prize 20191 awarded by the Research Commission of the Academic Council. This work is on the simultaneous measurement of several velocities in materials submitted to high velocity impacts using CW radar.

This work, entitled “In situ measurement of properties of new materials by studying interactions between shock waves and electromagnetic waves” and defended on 2019 January 14th, investigates the feasibility of radar based measurement of a shock wave velocity propagating inside a solid material and the associated particle velocity simultaneously.

The characterization of the dynamic behaviour of materials submitted to high rate mechanical loading has many applications, in space, defence and mechanical industries. In order to reach high levels of fidelity with numerical simulations, databases of material properties need to be filled with careful measurements.

To answer these challenges, the interactions between an electromagnetic wave in W band and a shock wave are modelled and complementary measurements are performed to assess the validity of the theoretical results. The computation is based on reflection coefficients on moving interfaces and on mechanical shock theory. The results show that a CW radar allows the determination of both the desired velocity and also the dielectric properties of the materials under test. Further developments on more complex shock phenomena are also presented.
