Abstract
The Internet has become essential to most enterprises and many private individuals. However, both the network and computer systems connected to it are still too vulnerable and attacks are becoming evermore frequent. To face this situation, traditional security techniques are insufficient and fault-tolerance techniques are becoming increasingly cost-effective. Nevertheless, intrusions are very special faults, and this has to be taken into account when selecting the fault-tolerance techniques.

Abstract
Autonomous systems are starting to appear in space exploration, elderly care and domestic service; they are particularly attractive for such applications because their advanced decisional mechanisms allow them to execute complex missions in uncertain environments. However, systems embedding such mechanisms simultaneously raise new concerns regarding their dependability. We aim in this paper to present these concerns and suggest possible ways to resolve them. We address dependability as a whole, but focus specifically on fault tolerance. We present some particularities of autonomous systems and discuss the dependability mechanisms that are currently employed. We then concentrate on the dependability concerns raised by decisional mechanisms and consider the introduction and assessment of appropriate fault tolerance mechanisms.

Résumé
Nous présentons les fonctionnalités dun service de sauvegarde coopérative pour dispositifs mobiles. Ce service repose sur la collaboration entre dispositifs pour assurer la sauvegarde et le recouvrement des données de chaque dispositif. Nous identifions les propriétés de sûreté de fonctionnement que lon est en mesure dattendre dun tel service. Nous analysons les systèmes de sauvegarde coopérative pair-à-pair décrits dans la littérature afin didentifier déventuelles fonctionnalités transposables à lenvironnement mobile. Enfin, nous concluons sur les spécificités de cet environnement et identifions les axes de recherche à explorer.

Abstract
The dependability of autonomous systems is a particular concern, notably because of the advanced decisional mechanisms and other artificial intelligence techniques on which such systems rely. This paper sets the context of dependability and autonomy, and focuses on two non-exclusive approaches aiming to improve dependability: fault tolerance and robustness. The paper gives definitions of these approaches, and studies their relationship and applicability to autonomous systems.
