Abstract

Two different laser phase noise measurement techniques are compared. One of these two techniques is based on a conventional and low cost delay line system which is usually set up for the linewidth measurement of semiconductor lasers. The results obtained with both techniques on a high spectral purity laser agree well and confirm the interest of the low cost technique. Moreover, an extraction of the laser linewidth using CAD tools is performed.

Abstract

The unique property of the ultra low losses of optical fiber can be used in the field of metrology to reach large delays, which are equivalent to ultra high quality factors. It is thus possible to realize, with a fiber spool, passive frequency references which can be used to characterize frequency sources of different type : microwave frequency sources and optical frequency sources. This paper describes two different benches, one in the microwave domain and the other one in the optical domain, which are based on optical fiber delay lines. The first bench is used to measure the phase noise of very high spectral purity microwave sources. The other one is dedicated to the measurement of the frequency fluctuations of ultra high spectral purity infrared lasers.

Abstract

A microwave frequency discriminator based on an optical delay line is studied. This system features a noise floor below -150 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. The noise mechanisms are studied in order to determine the main noise contributors.

Abstract

The use of optical resonators for microwave filtering is discussed. Several measurement benches, allowing the test of the optical and optical-microwave properties of high Q optical WGM resonators or optical fiber loop resonators, have been set-up. This paper gives an overview of all these measurement benches, together with a preliminary result on an RF high quality factor filter realized using a small length fiber loop.
