The JRL, Japanese-French Associated International Laboratory
Created in 2003, by the Department of Information and Communication Science and Technology of CNRS, and the Intelligent Systems Research Institute of AIST, the JRL (Joint Japanese-French Robotics Laboratory) is specialized in the research on robotics, particularly humanoid robotics. Since November 2005, the JRL is organized at two sites: the JRL-Japan, located at AIST in Tsukuba and the JRL-France, located at LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse. Each of those sites host researchers from the two nationalities.
The JRL-France has its objective of reinforcing the potential of research in France by close collaboration with AIST teams. It is organized by core researches coming from two main actors on robotics in CNRS, the LAAS and the LIRMM.
The JRL-France, through its acquisition of the platform HRP-2, a humanoid robot designed at AIST and Kawada Industries, will be equipped a unique resource in Europe, the access to which will be widely opened to the overall French research community.
