Tourism

France is widely known for food, wine and culture. Coastal resorts like Cannes, Nice and Biarritz have been popular with Kings, famous actors and other well known personalities since the 1900’s. Many European residents have second houses in various parts of France. Despite this major influx of people from many countries, France has always maintained its cultural identity, which you can find from the largest city to the tiniest village.

Toulouse, location of BCTM2003, is now the fourth city of France. For centuries, Toulouse has played an important role in French history. Today, it is Europe’s capital of space and aeronautics.
When you arrive at Toulouse Blagnac airport, you can see new Airbus planes on the tarmac waiting to be handed over to their new owners. In contrast, 20 minutes away, you will find old city houses, well preserved ancient buildings, museums and fine bars and restaurants. >From its very beginning, Toulouse has contrived to combine tradition and innovation, past and future.
You can take advantage of BCTM2003 conference to arrange some days off to visit Toulouse and its surrounding area. Hereafter some useful web sites and suggestions to plan tours or cultural events.

TOULOUSE

For those who love art and the various forms art takes, Toulouse has a wealth of original churches. Among them, we can name the Saint-Sernin basilica, the largest and most perfect Roman church in France ; the Saint-Etienne Cathedral, the Dalbade church, the Notre-Dame de la Daurade basilica, Saint-Pierre des Cuisines, the oldest religious building in Toulouse, which has been superbly renovated, the Augustins’ Monastery with its cloister and museum and the Jacobins Convent, whose audacious architecture makes it quite unique.
The Golden Age in Toulouse was between 1500 and 1700. Merchants thrived on the pastel (plant providing a blue pigment) trade and became Consuls or Capitouls, finding new symbols of power and prestige in the construction of sumptuous hotels surmounted with towers that dominated the town : the Assezat, Mansencal, Bernuy and Vieux Raisin hotels. During the same period (between 1544 and 1662), the oldest bridge of Toulouse, the Pont Neuf, was built.
